Gothic fiction refers to a style of writing that is characterized by elements of fear, horror, death, and gloom. Mary Shelley had an interest in writing elements of gothic horror themes to show fear and suspense in her stories. In Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, she uses a mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein to create gothic horror story. Victor, who loved science, had an ambition to create the “perfect human” in his eyes but as you will see stuff doesn't always go as planned. Although he had good intentions Victor Frankenstein becomes distressed and deranged and as a result of this he forgets and leaves behind his creation. The character says “How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavored to form.” When the monster and Victor somehow meet each other on a mountain they had a talk and the monster tried to explain everything that had happened to him so far and how it could be put all on Victor for leaving him and not teaching him what to do with his feelings when he’s angry these pains made him do what he did. Secondly, “I dreaded to behold this monster, but I feared still more that Henry should see him” At the same time Victor was scared of his creation but he feared more for Henry because the monster didn’t have no idea of what kind of pain it was causing at the time because he was never taught how to control his feelings because of Victor left him. I have murdered the lovely and the helpless; I have strangled the innocent as they slept, and grasped to death his throat who never injured me or any other living thing. I have devoted my creator, the select specimen of all that is worthy of love and admiration among men, to misery; I have pursued him even to that irremediable ruin.
