In the story Macbeth there was a lot different themes going on at the same time. But there was one that was a bigger one which was guilt. There is guilt almost through the entire story and coming from different characters as well. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had the two biggest parts in having felt guilty, it was always after they had murdered someone but depending on the person they reacted in there own ways. They would commit a bad crime and then feel the guilt either right after or a while later depending on the person. But they both did feel guilty some more than others though. Macbeth had a lot of guilt chasing him. The guilt began when Macbeth was done killing Duncan and he heard the guards crie, 'God bless us!' and 'Amen,' the other, as they had seen me with these hangman's hands. List'ning their fear, I could not say 'Amen,' when they did say 'God bless us'. Methought, I heard a voice cry, 'Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep'. (II.ii)So him saying that he could not say amen is due to the reason that he felt like a sinner. The quote “Macbeth does murder sleep” is said because now with this crime he has committed he will feel too much pain he will not sleep. This was almost instantly after the crime. He felt the guilt right away. When he got back to his home he said”"How is’t with me, when every noise appals me? What hands are here! Ha, they pluck out mine eyes. Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather The multitudinous seas incarnadine, Making the green one red. "(II.ii)Every noise made him nervous. He actually was so filled with guilt he didn’t put the dagger back. He looks down at the blood and saying that not even the ocean of Neptune’s can wash away the blood.
