Guilt In Susane Colasanti's Something Like Fate

Has anyone ever felt the feeling of guilt before? Like showing up to work late or hitting the snooze button every morning? Or maybe eating fast food while on a diet? This guilt is felt by the main character, Lani, in the novel Something like Fate by Susane Colasanti whenever she sees Jason, her dream guy. The reason Lani has this weight on her shoulders is because she knows her best friend Erin is obsessed with the gorgeous, blue-eyed boy. As the story progresses, Lani puts herself in jeopardy as she continues to have butterflies for Jason. The drama of Lani, Erin and Jason continues throughout the novel. While processing this book, I evaluated Lani and Jason’s relationship, questioned Jason’s thoughts toward each girl, and predicted what life after the novel looks like for Jason and Lani. The timeline of Lani and Jason’s relationship is quite uncanny. The first time they meet is what everybody dreams of. It’s the kind of connection where you can’t stop smiling because of the butterflies in your stomach and the twinkle in your eyes. This unique relationship has many bumps in the road, starting with the fact that Erin, Lani’s best friend, has her eye on the prize, Jason. I now know that perseverance played a big role in the tricky relationship between Lani and Jason. Overall, the drama between each of the characters left me on the edge of my seat. Every time I saw the pink cover of this jaw-dropping novel, it whispered, “pick me up and read me, Ali”  (personification). From the first page to the last word, this love story had kept me locked in on the story, while shutting out the world around me.
