The kite runner essay Amir struggles with guilt through his life based on what he witnesses as a child from what happen to Hassan. Amir desire for punishment allows Hosseini to move along the plot in the book. Amir witnesses the rape of Hassan causing him to feel guilt. After the kite competition Hassan ran to get the kite and he ran into Assef and his gang were Assef raped him in the alley and Amir witnessed it hiding behind a wall and he didn’t tell anyone about it which led to him feeling qguilt. “Did he know I knew what would I see if I did look in his eyes?Blame? Amir wondered if Hassan seen him hiding and he wondered what he would see in Hassan’s eyes when he looked into them he wondered if he would see guilt. Amir felt like he had betrayed Hassan by not helping him of telling anyone and he felt he should be punished. “I sat up a wedge of moonlight streamed in through the window, I said I watched Hassan get rapped. A part of me was hoping someone would wake up and hear so I wouldn’t have to live with this anymore. Hosseini 92-93. Amir wanted someone to hear him so he wouldn’t have to live with this anymore as a secret. Amir was living with all of this and it started to build up and he felt the only was for him to feel relief was for someone else to know the secret he was living
