Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the movement of water into and out of a polymer.
Hypotheses:
• If Gummi Bears are submerged in tap water and distilled water, they will expand due to osmosis in order to create equilibrium in hypotonic solution • If Gummi Bears are submerged in salt water, they will decrease inside to create equilibrium in a hypertonic solution
Materials:
• 2 Gummi Bears • 2 plastic 8oz cups • 2 forks • Distilled water • Centimeter rule • Saturated salt solution • Paper towels • Electric scale • Permanent marker
Procedures:
1. Obtain two plastic cups and two different color bears.
2. On the side of each cup, write your name using a permanent marker. Mark one cup for tap water and the other for distilled water.
3. Find the mass of each bear using a balance. Record the data in the data table.
4. Measure your bears from top to bottom (length), from side to side (width), and from front to back (height). Use your measurements to calculate the volume. Record your data in the data table.
5. Place the bears in the cups
6. Pour distilled water in the cup marked distilled. Pour enough water in the cup to fully cover the bear.
7. Pour tap water in the cup marked tap. Pour enough water in the cup to fully cover the bear.

This is due to osmosis like what occurred in the tap and distilled water. When the bear came into contact with the salt water solution, it was subject to a hypertonic solution. To achieve equilibrium, water left from within the bear and entered the solution. IF the bears, after the last day, were again placed in distilled water, the bears would likely grow in size once more due to what occurred when the bears were originally in distilled water. Osmosis would cause water molecules from the solution to enter the bear, increasing its size. Below is a table of the percent change in volume after each step of the
