Nicholas Johnson Mrs. Mitchell English 9; 2nd hour 7 March 2018 Gun Control Gun control is one of the most controversial topics today in our country. Many people in our country are divided on what should be done with people owning guns. The country is split on whether they are for or against it. All people can agree that they don’t want to see another high school shooting take place. This essay will talk about what is gun control, why people are for it and why people are against it. The Act of July 31, 1789 imposed taxes on imported spirits to help alleviate the debt of the Revolutionary War (Our History and Timeline). When President John Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King were assassinated, the Gun Control Act was passed and imposed stricter licensing and regulations on the firearms industry (Our History and Timeline). This act created new categories of firearms offenses, and also prohibits the sale of firearms and ammunition to felons and certain other people who are considered prohibited (Our History and Timeline). This is also the first time that there were Federal jurisdiction over destructive devices. These include bombs, mines, grenades and other similar devices (Our History and Timeline). This argument is further backed up by PhD John R Lott Jr. how published, More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and gun Control Laws, stated “States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes” (Gun Control-ProCon.org). Switzerland has the lowest crime rates in the world (Ghimire). In conclusion, there are many points on the issue of Gun Control. People who argue for it claim that more laws would help stop the wrong people from purchasing guns. Those who are against claim that more laws would lead to a bigger black market and people purchasing guns illegally.
