Getting high with EDM Due to the advance of technology and social media, people can easily access to different kinds of music online, particularly with websites like YouTube and SoundCloud. Without these resources in the past, people generally only listened to a particular genre and settled down. Now since it is so easy to access to different styles of music, people always listen to multiples genres of music and likewise appreciate all of the ones they enjoy. Base on Van Havere et al.’s study, there is a clear overlap between the categories, suggesting that, nowadays, young people prefer various kinds of music (Van Havere et al. 5). EDM is produced primarily for use by DJ and is produced in the context of a continuous DJ set; wherein the DJ progresses from one record to the next via a synchronized mix. EDM does not refer to a specific genre, but serves as an umbrella term for several commercially popular genres, including techno, house, trance, drum and bass, dubstep, trap, Jersey club, and their respective subgenres. According to Billboard, the global EDM business had reached a value of more than $6.9 billion in 2014. Some renowned EDM artists today included Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Alesso and Tiesto. EDM was first popularized via regional nightclub scenes in the 1980s, the warehouse party scene of the late 1980s, and the early rave scene of the acid house movement in the late 1980s. Nowadays, EDM is considered one of the largest styles of music around the world. Basically, you can listen to EDM no matter where you go and it is constantly played on the radio. It shows that people who listen to EDM is more likely to take illegal drug and explain why people have the perception to link EDM and drug together regularly. Also, they claimed that the odds of using illegal drugs were nearly 2 times higher for those people who reported visiting clubs (Van Havere, et al. 1).
