Philadelphia is one of the most known cities in the United States, it is known as the city of brotherly love, the home of the real philly cheesesteak and even one the most dangerous cities in the nation. Philadelphia is currently ranked as one of the most dangerous cities due to its high crime rate, but what is really provoking these very crimes? As the community and population of Philadelphia rose, so did the gun violence on the streets. Recent studies show that the core of the problem has been gun violence and not just for the recent years but in fact for decades. "As the Mayor of Philadelphia, I know all too well that gun violence tears apart families and communities. But gun violence isn't just an urban problem or a mass-shooting problem," Mayor Michael Nutter states. A year after the U.S senate blocked legislation to require background checks to obtain a gun license a new organization launched that will unite millions of Americans to end gun violence. This organization is known as Everytown for Gun Safety. Philadelphia Mayor Nutter, moms, gun violence prevention advocates and law enforcement gather in Philadelphia city hall to launch Everytown. A former Mayor, Michael Bloomberg announced that he intends to spend at the least $50 million this year towards reducing gun violence. He intends to do so through Everytown’s efforts and his own personal expenditures. Everytowns goal is to gain 2.5 by this year by showing the many different ways gun crime affects us as a nation (Rosenthal, 2014). Everytown will ask all to spread awareness of gun violence in hopes it will reduce. Every day in America, guns kill 86 people. This movement is intended to continue the press for change and fight for the common sense gun policies to state capitols, corporate boards and federal elections.
