On February 14, 2018 a former student of Stonewall Douglas High School walked the hall with a rifle and fired at many of the students leaving 17 students and teachers dead and 17 severely injured. Many students nade calls to their families and to an emergency number. The shooter was eventually caught but to this day they are still remembering the tragedies that occurred on that day. For many students that was going to be a normal valentines day where the only things that they had to worry about was school and who their valentine was. This shooter who was later identified as Nickolas Cruz.
The book “Rampage The Social Roots Of School Shootings” written by Newman et al, offers many different views and theories behind the issues of Rampage school shootings. In this paper I will give the reader an in depth overview and evaluation of the aforementioned book. Offering researched based reasons to why these school shootings actually happen. They explore the communities of Heath and Westside, the grounds of two horrific acts of rampage shootings by Michael Carnell, Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson. They explain various angles of there research such as identifying an issue, how signals given by children can be misinterpreted, the effects of social capital and how mental factors play a role in the acts of the shooters.
Parents have a larger responsibility over their own youth than the government having a responsibility over all of our youth. According to James Alan Fox in Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond Newtown, parents have the biggest responsibility over their kids playing violent video games. “To the extent that youngsters spend endless hours being entertained by violence says more about the lack of parental supervision and control. It isn 't that the entertainment media are so powerful; it is that our other institutions - family, school, religion, and neighborhood - have grown weaker with respect to socializing children…” Fox is trying to get at one thing here, and this is that we may think these violent video games were made to be addicting

School shootings are something that happen rather often here in America, that most of us seem to be getting increasingly (and alarmingly) desensitized to; a simple Google search could tell one everything they need to know about the most recent shooting, which, at the time of writing, was at a Dickenson High School. The first thing someone should ask in this situation is ‘why, exactly, is this happening?’, and there are plenty of people who would be willing to give a different opinion to why this is happening. For others, a view that has arose later, guns are the “perpetuation of illicit social hierarchies, the elevation of force over reason,” and a promoter of collectivity and remover of individuality. This latter view of guns is a direct application of the conflict theory. For those who hold this view, and likely support the passage of gun control laws, guns are representative of social inequality that is abundant in modern society, that the usage of guns is a means of violently coercing those of lower classes to remain in their class. Criminals know that if people have guns to protect themselves then they might not be successful in a shooting. Gun Regulation is immoral because Guns are not what kill people. Gun control has been a controversial issue for years and numerous solutions have been proposed and enacted. The debate sparked after tragic civilian attacks, like school shootings. An example, is the tragedy in 1999 at Columbine High School. Two teens attacked the school, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before killing themselves. Discussions leading to debates on the local, county, state and federal level about gun control, highlighting the influence wrought by big money had many voices, but little impact on either issue. For thousands of shooting crimes happening in the U.S., many of them have the titles started with “elementary school” or “women”. Most recently, a six-year-old boy was injured and died during a shooting at a South Carolina elementary school, and the Sandy Hook Elementary school. These killings lead to the losing of lives and the sorrow for those families. Those primary students do not know how to use a gun, or they do not hold guns to school. So they cannot benefit from the self-defense function from guns, the only thing they get is the life threat
