As MTV was a big helper in “marketing” bands, MTV had initially refused to play Guns N’ Roses music because of the ugliness the band portrayed. After a call from Geffen’s David Geffen called MTV, MTV reluctantly aired “Welcome to the Jungle” at 6am (early in the morning when people are sleeping). Actually, the song touched a lot of the early viewers that morning, essentially frying the circuit board from callers asking “who was that band”. Thus, contributing to GNR’s popularity among teens. The first album included “Welcome to the Jungle”, and another classic “Sweet child O’ Mine” which was more of slow song. Michael Jackson and Guns N’ Roses still are played regularly in contemporary times. They both have remastered editions of their music playing on Spotify. MTV played an important role in both these artists careers, while in the 80’s the ability to reach listeners was through radio and television (if it was affordable). Now computers with internet access contribute to the ease for music artists marketing. I could take a poll and ask 20 different age groups of men and women.
