Gustave Flaubert, an influential French novelist, gave his outlook on one’s career path by saying, “Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work.” I infer that being regular and orderly throughout your life, in this particular quote, means to having a sound educational background that can be applied through one’s degree. This must be done to complete the second part, being violent and original in one’s work. This refers to having the same sound educational background that is then applied to a career that one can be passionate about and one where he can make his own mark. For tax accounting, the degree achieved, the elective courses taken, and advanced degrees sought out can take many forms, although there is an ideal set. This preferred course that is taken by most is best described by an online state by state accounting guide called Accounting Edu. This source explains that tax accounting always requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field while taking elective courses in tax accounting to obtain the essential background within the profession. As far as advanced degrees, a post-graduate certificate in taxation can often replace the tax accounting electives. Along with the certificate, there are four advanced degrees. This includes a Master’s degree in Accounting with a Taxation track, a Master of Tax Accounting (MTA), a Master of Science in Taxation, or a Taxation Master’s in Business administration (MBA). Based upon this layout, my current undergraduate degrees in Accounting and Finance followed by either a Taxation MBA or an MTA would be the optimal combination to have the best chance at success within the field of tax accounting. One thing that has best prepared me in being confident about this career choice is the advice and insight given to me through the speakers and readings done throughout the semester. Those who have come in to speak to us have given me points to reflect on to make this decision, including Evan Brande posing the question of what are you passionate about, Tori Campbell’s formula for success, and Jack Bedessem’s thoughts on moral codes. I have found that I am passionate about business, have a great start to achieving the formula for success, and that my own moral codes guides what I choose to do, both professionally and personally. While the speakers influenced more of a personal reflection of what I want to do, the readings provided the necessary factual background that is needed to make an appropriate decision. Indirectly in the class, I have also learned of the need and importance of tax accountants through our class labs. This is what sparked my wanting do this particular career. The work that we did in class regarding payroll taxes intrigued me and I was able to catch onto the idea very easily.
