Introduction Health Information Technology (HIT) strategic planning is known as the process of identifying and assigning priorities to the requests of information technology. This then helps the organization in executing their business plan and reaching their strategic goals and objectives. The importance of HIT strategic planning as increased over the years due to healthcare organizations growing in size and complexity. HIT supports strategic goals, objectives and priorities of the organization. Therefore, without the use of HIT strategic planning, managers would not be able to support day-to-day operations. The primary priority will focus on providing quality care at the lowest possible cost for our patients. Our second objective will be to reduce medical errors. A medical error can be defined as the “failure of a planned action to be completed as intended (an error of execution) or the use of a wrong plan to achieve an aim (an error of planning)”(Grober & Bohnen, 2005). Medical errors can include medication errors, incorrect use of ICD 10, and inaccurate documentation. Quality improvements will be made within the hospital in terms of medical records, clinical decision support systems, and incident reporting. For example, Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems will be implemented to each workstation. These systems will allow healthcare providers and staff with ample amount of time for every patient along with improving workflow within the hospital. Strategic planning lets organizations provide quality services in addition to proficient ways to continue to succeed as an organization. Having goals and objectives listed allows organizations to aim towards higher standards all while maintaining professionalism. For the overall HIT strategic plan to be successful the architecture and infrastructure specifications has to be understood. Software development is included into the plan in order to ensure all operations are able to function properly and effectively.
