In the video game, Never Alone, the Inupiaq’s culture and lifeways are depicted through indigenous Alaskan stories. The game addresses several ways in which Inupiaq folklore, subsistence strategies, and worldview are portrayed. Inupiaq folklore primarily consists of storytelling, art, and their community as a whole.

The Las Cruces community has various food pantries and shelters to help those struggling with food insecurity. Two in particular that serve not only children, but all who are food insecure is Casa de Peregrinos and the Farmers Market at Mesa Middle School. Casa de Peregrinos is a food pantry that serves not only Las Cruces, but much of the Dona Anna community. Their main pantry is in Las Cruces and is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays both in the mornings and afternoons. People can come and receive groceries and in some cases referrals to other agencies.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a program helps subsidize programs for individuals seeking treatment. The SAMHSA is focusing on implementing more aid to the older generation (Scheinholtz, 2010). Within SAMHSA is additional programs such as Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), (Scheinholtz, 2010). These programs that are available make it possible or those like Miguel to receive the resources that he needs to recovery.

As previously mentioned above, Narcotics Anonymous is a support group where individuals who are addicted to drug using can go into recovery with the help of others to cleanse themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally from drugs. The support group accepts individuals who are looking to stop their use of any illegal drugs, substance use, and alcohol consumption. An individual(s) with a problem with alcohol and substance use is viewed as an illness, based on the severity of use, and its affects it does to an individual. The war on drugs was launched as an effort to prevent and reduce substance abuse and addiction. Exclusively, focusing on white, middle-class children, and possibly demonizing others, particularly minorities. Nevertheless, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America campaign used a different approach. This campaign “utilized volunteer talent working together against a single social problem to help young people live free of drug and alcohol abuse, and to assist parents in prevention efforts. The organization gets input from scientists, therapist, community activist, researchers, law enforcement, and offers resources for parents and teenagers.”
Some areas in the United States face higher rates of crime and drug abuse. This contributes to the prevalence of health disparities within different communities. In order to eliminate or decrease the distinct difference between areas that are at higher health risks than others one must begin to understand why they exist. Some areas have higher drug abuse rates than others due to factors such as poor education, poverty, unemployment rates, and lack of community involvement. These things play a major role in whether or not a young adult is going to start the use of drugs or drinking alcohol.
The peer support helps people feel like they have support from people facing identical challenges. Suggestions and words of hope are instilled throughout the meeting. Incentives for sobriety are offered and encouragement is provided. There were several people who stated during the meeting that they attempted to attend church to curtail their addiction.
My community placement is at Brampton Caledon Community Living. The community is mostly for adults and people with intellectual and physical disabilities. It works to support and empower all people in the area and it works alongside the community and families in the community. Most of the people that attend the program are adults that live with either their parent(s) or a family member (low income) in Bolton. To help reach out to and accommodate to families with lower income, the center charges a small fee for the adult to attend.
