Hairspray Movie Review

Recently, we watched a Broadway musical based film titled Hairspray directed by Adam Shankman, starring actors such as Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta, and Michelle Pfeiffer. This entertaining romantic comedy showcases a teenager by the name of Tracy Turnblad who tries to make a change about the ways of integration in Baltimore after securing a spot on a popular TV show in that city. The movie begins with the exposition, settling in the background of the film as Tracy is introduced as a high school student who is a fan of The Corny Collins Show where they feature teenagers dancing together. The show is primarily made up of white dancers only featuring African-Americans on what they call, “Negro Day.” The inciting incident occurs when Tracy is chosen by Corny Collins to enter the show and soon, she becomes one of the most popular dancers. As the story progresses many things are changing around the city like Tracy convincing her mother, who is afraid to go out, become her agent and introducing Penny to Seaweed, whom falls in love later on. Then Velma decides to cancel Negro Day which spurs a protest turned March for integration. During the march, Tracy becomes accused of harassing an officer and a search party is sent for her, as her friends help her escape. The climax …show more content…

Apart from the diction, one of the vivid characters in this movie that I 'm going to focus on is Tracy Turnblad. She is probably the most important character in this movie, since she is the driving factor for the conflict to occur. She was the only one brave enough to proudly accept the other race as she strived to gain them integration into the community. She is also the one who suggested the march after Velma decided to cancel “Negro Day”, which led to the very climax of the movie where the black dancers got to be on the show for the hairspray pageant. The result of her racial acceptance is what led to the eventual integration of the African Americans into the dance
