Have you ever wondered how Halloween is celebrated across the world in different countries such as in Ireland, England, Mexico, and France or how different religions view the Halloween season? In America, we typically dress up in costume and venture out into the night for candy while ,for example, children in the Philippines may go door to door singing songs about the souls in purgatory and asking for money to pay for masses for the dead. Halloween has a long history, it dates all the way back to medieval times in Ireland and has been altered quite a bit over the centuries. When we think of trick-or-treating, we imagine witches, princesses, ghosts, and vampires. Over the years, Halloween in America has become merely a holiday for children to dress up and collect candy. Today, Halloween is celebrated many different ways, including wearing costumes, children trick or treating, carving pumpkins, and going to haunted houses and parties. Due to growing commercialism, the assessed number of probable trick-or-treaters in 2010 (ages 5-14) across the United States was 41 million. The number of inhabited households in this country with possible trick-or-treaters in 2010 was 116.7 million. 92% of homes had people who believed their zones safe and 78% stated that there wasn’t any place within a mile of their homes where they wouldn’t walk alone at night. Pumpkins are one of the main items of Halloween. Pumpkin making by main pumpkin-producing states in 2010 was 1.1 billion pounds. Illinois was the top state in pumpkin production producing an estimated 427 million pounds of the vined orange gourd.
