Hamid Babaei (Born in 1984) is a PhD student at the University of Liege in Belgium, his education is completely funded due to a scholarship that he received to attend the university. He completed his masters degree in Industrial Engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology in 2008.[2] Afterwhich, he finished his PhD course in 2009 at the University of Liege. In the summer of 2013, Mr. Babaei and his wife decided to visit their families in Iran. Upon their visit, Babaei was summoned by the Intelligent Services of Iran for questioning, being accused of communicating with hostile governments[2]. Hamid Babaei was only three years and seven months into his PhD program, when he was taken away. While being a student he was incarcerated on his trip to visit his family in 2013 because he was accused of communicating with hostile governments. So far he has spent four months in detention. Out of those four months, he spent three weeks in solitary confinement. He has now been sentenced to a six year prison sentence for being a threat to Iranian national security[6]. When he was detained, he was given a trial that only lasted 10 minutes and he was denied his rights to leave even with his current health conditions.
