Hamilton Brothers Ranch Field Trip Report
The operation visited was named Hamilton Brothers Ranch, it engaged in activities such as row crop, dry land grain and safflower farming as well as livestock, which included cattle and sheep (the focus of this report). The main goal related to the ownership of livestock was to maintain their sheep-stocking rate for their available resources and balance this with their cattle operation in a profitable fashion. Products sold were a high quality lamb-crop sold at value and fleece from the ewes. Prices weren't mentioned for the fleece or lambs but we do know they were sold at 10 months around 135 lbs. Buck lambs, yearlings, rams, mature ewes were sold too.

After the harvest of the grain crop, sheep grazed on crop residues. Once the land had recuperated and been rained on, grasses provided feed for the sheep. The native grass ranges of the ranch complemented the stubble and fallow grazing. Ewe lambs were not supplemented before breeding whereas pregnant ewes were.
Seeing as the flock was closed, the manager didn’t have to worry too much about biosecurity. It can be deduced by the big predatory issue of coyotes that they were one of the major causes of death in the herd. Lime was used to disinfect pens. Antibiotics were used when necessary and the animals were checked for residues. Depending on whether antibiotics were used on an animal or not, it was sold to different retailers under different denominations (natural, antibiotic free…).
Waste management was not addressed during the field trip because animals on pasture distribute their manure during the grazing
