Hamlet written by William Shakespeare is a tragic story. The play begins with the death of King Hamlet, who is Hamlet's father. After his death, his brother Claudius, who is the uncle of Hamlet, is crowned the King of Denmark and after marries Queen Gertrude, Hamlet's mother. Not long after the death of his father and marriage of his mother and uncle, the ghost of King Hamlet appears to Hamlet. Others in Denmark believes that the king died because of a snake bite, but the Ghost reveals that the king was murdered by Claudius. Hamlet is outraged by the actions of Claudius and promises for revenge. Hamlet then puts on a play for Claudius that reenacts the death of the king Hamlet. He decides to join them the next day at midnight and wait for the ghost to reappear. He is determined to speak to this ghost, even if it is a good spirit, or an evil one, because he recognizes its likeness to his father. Finally the ghost appears and demands Hamlet to follow him. The ghost reveals that he is murdered by his brother the king of Denmark, King Claudius. And not killed by a poisonous snake. After the ghost disappears, He tells Horatio "As I perchance hereafter shall think meet To put an antic disposition on" (1, 5, 180). Meaning he will pretend to act crazy to make it look like he is not a threat to Claudius and others in order to find out the truth about his father's death. He starts this by visiting Ophelia and not saying anything making it look like he is in love and has gone insane for her. Ophelia tells his father Polonius about this, tricking him that Hamlet is actually crazy for Ophelia, He tells this to King Claudius and Gertrude and making them think that Hamlet is not crazy because of his father’s death but because he is in love with Ophelia. Hamlet believes his mother is committing adultery and incest by marrying and having an affair with Claudius, and he also suspects that she might have even been part of King Hamlet’s murder because she does not show any grief after the death of King Hamlet. Also Claudius not only stole the crown from Hamlet's father by murdering him, but he stole the crown from Hamlet, who was next in line to become the king of Denmark. The most important one is that his father's ghost has come to visit him and told him to take actions for his murder. The Ghost says “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (1, 5 25). Meaning Hamlet needs to get revenge for the murder he did not deserve.
