What makes a literary work timeless? Recurrently, people of all backgrounds question the importance, or even relevance, of Shakespearean works. We hear, “Why are we reading such old pieces of literature? It’s the twenty-first century!” Those who ask this question, are simply missing the point. Shakespeare writes in a way that proves relevant in all generations, and will continue on till the end of time. Why is this? Like any other quality work, Shakespeare's works contain prominent questions. More so than “morals” or “lessons”. Since Shakespeare constantly delved within his own mind for these complicated questions about life, he couldn’t help but to have them leak into his works. Mentioned several times earlier, Hamlet is a new Christian, which means he is still transitioning from his former lifestyle as a non-Christian. This transition affects every aspect of life. The way you think, the way you feel, and the way you interact with others. As this play is full of lust, greed, violence, and revenge, it sparks many of the religious anxieties that were quite prevalent during the Sixteenth Century; As this play was far from “Christian”. Hamlet’s constant desire to seek justice for his deceased father in the form of murder, clashes with his newfound faith. Hamlet’s subconscious is saying, “You know this is wrong. Your heavenly Father will serve justice enough.” And the ghost of his father is saying, “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (Act 1, Scene V). With both sides presenting compelling arguments, Hamlet never really knows which “father” to listen to. But, as the play goes on, we learn that the ghost of his father would get the best of him. From his hateful words towards the Queen, to his final moments, revenge got the best of him. This speaks to the strength of a new Christian. Trials and tribulations prove too difficult to overcome for most people, that is why courage and determination are such sought after characteristics. Most people don’t have them… including
