Hamlet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare said to be published around the early 1600’s. The play is set in the kingdom of Denmark, it overviews the plot of revenge that Prince Hamlet has on his Uncle Claudius the killer of his father as well as the new husband of his mother. Hamlet does not want to avenge the death of his father but gives in to the voices of others which results in his antic disposition. Throughout the play we see the transformation that Hamlet goes through from planning to trick the king as well as the kingdom that he is crazy to instill fear in all of them as well as alter his mental being and becomes crazy. He has anger built up towards his uncle because of the murder that he committed as well as the robbery of the thrown. Hamlet battles the king as well as his emotions in the play.
Towards the beginning of the play Hamlet gets confronted by the ghost of his father. His father describes to Hamlet that the person that dethroned him of his position is the one that is his murderer. He explains to Hamlet the exact incident that caused his death and the emotional pain he suffers from. He then tells Hamlet to avenge the death of his murder so that he may rest in peace. Before the ghost leaves, he tells Hamlet to exclude his mother out of his plans and let her be. After the confrontation with his father’s ghost, Hamlet commands Horatio and Marcellus to swear on his sword that they will not speak of what occurred that night. As they all leave, Hamlet expresses his discontent with the new found responsibility he now carries. “The time is out of joint. O cursed spite that ever I was born to set it right“(i.V.176). Polonius arrives and reminds the king of his plan to hide in Gertrude’s room and observe their confrontation. Polonius leaves and the king is alone. He immediately confesses his guilt over the sins he has committed. He aches for forgiveness, but is unprepared to give up his newly gained power, he then falls to his knees and begins to pray. Hamlet sneaks into the room after Claudius in hopes of killing him, suddenly he realizes that if he kills Claudius while praying, he will be sent to hell and the soul of Claudius will be sent to heaven. This wouldn’t be an adequate revenge. Considering that Claudius killed Hamlets father before confessing to any sins guaranteeing that he would be sent to hell, he was not going to give him that privilege. Hamlet decides that he will wait when Claudius is sinning to commit the deed. “What if this cursed hand were thicker than itself with brothers blood, is there not rain enough in the sweet heavens to wash it white as snow? Whereto serves mercy but to confront the visage of offence”(iii.iii.212). In this quotation as Claudius confesses to the murder of his brother as well as expresses his grief that he is withholding for the awful sin he has committed.
