Hamlet is expressing to the audience at the beginning of the play where he feels depressed, in a dark place wanting to disappear. He feels in deep anguish and despair because of his father's death and his mother's remarriage to his uncle, Claudius. Because of society and God, Hamlet refrained from taking his own life. The text reveals the struggle he's going through in real life and in his own thoughts. Religion played a huge part in the era Hamlet grew up in, God is mentioned many times in the soliloquy. Hamlet questions God and his plan. Betrayal plays a huge part in Hamlet's life, being betrayed by his mom and his uncle. This comparison highlights Hamlet's belief that Claudius is beneath him and not deserving of comparison to his father. Death and morality are shown at the beginning of the play, but death is the center of the whole play. He's been attempting to make sense of everything and figure out why people act or believe the way they do ever since his father passed away. Another theme shown in the play is insanity and madness. Through the soliloquy and play, he has been obsessed with avenging his father and ended up driving himself to insanity.
