Foil Character In the play Hamlet the his fathers Ghost plays a huge role in the struggle of Hamlets transcendence. He influences Hamlet indirectly that makes him think outside of the paradigm. He makes Hamlet struggle with his own self, just by commanding him to avenge his death. His commands make Hamlet look inside himself and analyze who he is which makes him transcend. In the beginning of the play Hamlet is immediately consumed by the presence of this ghost that he hasn’t even met. He goes against his friends wishes to speak with the ghost. There is when his father or a devil commands him to avenge his uncle, Claudius. Hamlet is overwhelmed by this command. He struggles because he doesn’t want to kill claudius. He struggles with himself when he calls himself a coward because he hasn’t done what the ghost has asked him to do. He is being consumed throughout the play by the struggle. But Hamlet still does not kill him. Even though it was the “witching hour” this only shows that through his father's commands Hamlet has struggled and has begun to transcend. The ghost made hamlet see internal self and what he first thought was cowardly he now will not perform because he is now leaving a paradigm that everybody else is in. He doesn’t live to kill like Laertes and he is realizing that getting revenge so quickly is foolish and not what he is inside. He feels that “divine power” helping him reach a new level of clarity which others don’t understand. So they portray him as mad, but he really isn’t.
