The Shakespearean play of Hamlet takes place around 15th century.The play is about a prince named Hamlet. Hamlet is a Danish prince who suffers from the death of his father. He comes back from attending a school in Germany to learn that his mother, Gertrude, has married his father’s brother, Claudius. Even worse, Claudius has appointed himself as king, even though Hamlet was the rightful heir to the throne. The father’s ghost arrives to the castle to tell Hamlet that he was murdered, and Hamlet must exact revenge upon Claudius. Hamlet's father was murdered by Claudius by pouring poison into his father’s ear. Hamlet figures that, in order to do this, he needs to pretend to go insane. I chose this time period because there were still multiple aspects of nobility such as kings, queens, princes, and princesses. This time period was a better choice because it was a choice I can visualize and it plays into the whole aspect of power grabbing and fighting for thrones. Other modern adaptations exist for Hamlet. For example, the 1996 Hamlet film adaptation has power hungry grabs in the midst of a corporation. However, there would be no variety to the costumes since it would be suits and pin up skirts. In Act I Scene I, Horatio wears a golden bath robe with golden shoes when he talks to the guards. It doesn’t seem like much when looked at face value. However, the color of the golden bathrobe and golden shoes symbolize the rich status of Horatio since he has some relation to the nobility. The bathrobe itself symbolizes his spacious carefree character. Horatio is versatile as a bathrobe can fit many bodies and allows for breathing room. When the audience first witnesses the ghost in Act I Scene I, the ghost is wearing worn out battle armor. The armor is chipped and one can see through into the body of the ghost. This is to symbolize despair of a battle the ghost has lost. The only non gray or greenish color the ghost has is the leather pants. They are brown leather and are part of the former king’s armor.
