Discuss the ideas developed by the text creator about the role self-respect plays when an individual responds to injustice. Self-respect, or self-esteem is a feeling of confidence and pride of an individual or the feeling that one is behaving with honor and dignity. Self-respect affects an individual in all kinds of perspective such as confidence, sense of honor or even an individual’s response to injustice. William Shakespeare developed the idea that when facing injustice, the action an individual take is related to self-respect. When Laertes is confronting Claudius with the death of his father he says “Conscience and grace, to the profoundest pit! [He dares] damnation. To this point [he stands], that both the words [he gives] to negligence, let come what comes, only [he’ll] be revenged most thoroughly for [his] father.” (Act IV scene iv l.138-142) For revenging his father, Laertes is willing to throw his conscience and grace to hell and don’t care about the consequences his revenge will lead to. He focuses on the revenge and put everything else behind. His self-respect has made him fearless and determinate. When Claudius asks him to what extent is he willing to kill Hamlet and avenge his father, Laertes answered “[He will] cut his throat in the church.” (Act IV scene vii l.139)Laertes is determinate, to avenge his father, he is willing to give anything to avenge his father, even if he has to give up his religious belief, even if he will kill, even if he has to go to hell after he’s dead for what he had done. Due to his high self-respect, instead of putting things behind and move on, he chooses to stand up and bravely fight against all the injustices.
