Nala vs. Ophelia When comparing the love interests in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and Disney’s The Lion King, they are similar, and different. Hamlet is a play about vengeance and death. The movie The Lion King is also about vengeance, and loyalty. Looking at Ophelia and Nala in more detail, it is clear that both characters are caring and smart, but they both aren’t obedient. Nala and Ophelia are both caring. Ophelia shows her care for Hamlet when she says “ Oh, what a noble mind is here o’er thrown!-/ The courtier’s, soldier’s, scholer’s, eye, tongue, sword,/ Th’ Glass of fashion and the mould of form,/ Th’ observe of all observers, quite, quite down!” (III.I.150-155). You can tell she cares deeply by saying how she misses the old him, and how she is concerned about how he has gone mad. Deeply she cares not only about Hamlet, but about her father and her brother as well. Unfortunately, because she cares so deeply about them, this os a factor of why she goes mad is when her father dies. Not only does Ophelia care deeply about everyone, but so does Nala. Ophelia always obeys her authoritative figure, which would be her father, while Nala does not obey her’s, who would be Scar. Ophelia shows her obedience when she said “No my good lord. But as you did command/ I did repel his fetters and denied/ His access to me” (II.I.108-110). She rejected Hamlet's advances to her because her father and her brother had told her to steer clear of him. Nala on the other hand is disobedient to Scar. The lionesses are given the duty to hunt for all of the hyenas, and themselves. Instead of doing this, Nala runs away to go find help for Pride Rock. She completely disobeys Scars orders, and is the reason he is overthrown at the end. As you can tell, this shows that Opheilia and Nala are quite different in their obedience to authoritative
