In Act 1, “all is not well” in Denmark as there are unnatural occurrences as well as a new king , Claudius, being inaugurated which creates uncertainty and unrest for Denmark.
One unnatural occurrence is the watchman claiming to have seen the apparition of the late King Hamlet in armour. The three watchmen were on duty on a dark winter’s night -a sense of uncertainty and tension was in the atmosphere. Here they encountered the ghost and soon identified it as King Hamlet. Horatio believes this ghost is a warning of upcoming misfortune in Denmark. The presence of this ghost echoes the unrest soul and the upset in the balance of nature. Hamlet speaks to the ghost alone as Marcellus says, “something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” in which Hamlet questions if the “spirit of health or goblin damned.” Yet Hamlet learns that Claudius murdered Hamlet’s father in which Hamlet desires to seek avenge yet the ghost persuades him to let Gertrude pay for her sins in heaven – “I was born to set it right”.
