The type of love felt by Hamlet and Laertes is quite different. Ophelia is the sister of Laertes and therefore he has brotherly love for her. Before leaving Denmark, Laertes advises against relations with Hamlet. He remarks on the love Hamlet has for Ophelia as being “The perfume and suppliance of a minute,/ No more.” (I, iii, 9-10)

He rejects Hamlet’s affection towards her as false and short-lived before ordering that they end their relationship. However, despite this outwardly cruel manipulation of his sister to benefit his personal reputation “Laertes thinks that Hamlet will eventually hurt Ophelia” and thus his warning does truly look out for her genuine wellbeing (Tovsen, 2012, p. 8).

Without these attributes, Ophelia could be able to stand up for herself, have a solid stance on important issues, and protect herself from getting hurt.

What wilt thou do for her?” (5.1.280-82), in contrast his speech and his approach to her does not match with it. He acted mad in front of Ophelia and verbally abuse her with “ If thou dost marry, I’ll give thee this plague for thy dowry.... if thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool, for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them.
In Act 3.1 of Hamlet, Hamlet sees Ophelia approaching him after his soliloquy and he wants himself to be in her prayers, referring to her as "The fair Ophelia", and a "nymph" (90). At this point in time, Hamlet is not mad at Ophelia yet, and wants her to pray for, and remember him; it is clear he sill loves her. “Fair” in this case means beautiful, as it is paired with the word nymph. A nymph is a forest spirit in Greek mythology, who appears as an extremely beautiful woman. Later though, he shouts "are you honest?

William Shakespeare uses imagery and allusion to demonstrate the result of manipulation from other characters upon Ophelia, daughter of Polonius, and leading up to her death. Her death was not the consequence of disgraceful actions of her own, but rather by the involvement of others and their influence on her life. The first example of a character’s uncontrolled passion can be shown by Ophelia when she gets deflowered by her boyfriend, Hamlet ignoring the warnings of patriarchal pressure about women’s behavior in society because she is passionately in love with him. We later find out that Ophelia is not a virgin anymore when she sings during her insanity after Hamlet departures to England and her father’s death. “ Quoth she “Before you tumbled me, you promised me to wed.”” (4,5,67-68)
Hamlet does not value Ophelia 's feelings he belittles her. In Hamlets defense this is the way he was brought up to treat women, during that time this was a common way to treat a women. Even though in today 's society it is not at all ok to treat women with such disrespect. He also likes for everything to go as planned and this may result in why he can not have a stable relationship with a woman. This also causes him to have many stumbling blocks in his life that causes some emotional pain
