We have come a long way from the dark times when we, americans, exercised slavery throughout the country. From when african americans fought for their freedom. From when they pursued through the rigorous implications caused by white men. From when public areas were segregated between white and black races. Today we have grown exponentially to become a country that is so diverse we can be proud of it, yet, though on paper we are all equal, are we in the eyes of society?
In the short story, “Long, Long After School” by Ernest Buckler, it becomes apparent that Wes Holman’s emotional strength was formed after he struggles through conflicts. Firstly, much of his emotional strength was formed due to the amount of bullying in his past. This bullying has led him to create a barrier between him and others. Specifically, Wes was known as a tough guy to the narrator, suggesting an emotional barrier. “Perhaps you remember how the kids used to tease me at school” (Buckler 113), Wes said to the narrator.
Substance abuse can ruin the best of relationships. Throughout Glass Castle this is demonstrated by Jeanette and her father’s relationship. Rex (Jeanette’s father), is an alcoholic which over time deteriorates his and Jeanette’s relationship. When Jeanette is a young child, she sees no flaws in her father and he is her hero. Jeanette only sees the inventive creative side to him when he explains his grand ideas.
He states that the premise was simple, “Frank Merriwell was a student at Fardale Military Academy. He was wholesome but no choirboy, confident but not haughty, good looking, fearless and trustworthy. In school, he competed in sports, acted responsibly, and converted enemies to friends”. Patten made a character that could find a way to make things work no matter how bad the situation is. Anderson also suggests, that adolescent readers benefited by internalizing valuable lessons of manliness that Merriwell’s accomplishments conveyed.
Approximately 24 million people in the United States struggle with an eating disorder. Almost 50% of these people have depression (11). Depression, anxiety, and anger are very common among people with eating disorders. Chris Crutcher, the author of A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune, uses Angus as a main character who struggles with trying to fit in because of his eating disorder. Angus has struggled with obesity all his life, and a main cause is bullying.
The upbringing of a child contains many factors, many of which correlate to where a child grows up. The people, culture, and experiences of someone’s childhood are the greatest determining factor for what kind of person they will become. So how does the nature and nurture of one’s upbringing impact the decisions that they make, and their life in general? Author Wes Moore explores this question in his memoir, The Other Wes Moore, as it relates to two lives in particular. Moore main purpose in this book is to explore the overarching impact that a collection of expectations and decisions, not always one’s own, can have on someone’s life.
For example, when the Junk Man gets sick, Arthur looks after him and even visits him in the hospital. In this important moment, Arthur shows loyalty and kindness by being there for the Junk Man despite being in an uncomfortable position (Pg. #137-140). This shows how much Arthur has grown, learning to see the good in others instead of judging them by their appearance like how people misjudged him at first. In the end, being kind to the Junk Man helps Arthur grow and understand the world better.
Imagine knowing that in just one month you will sit in the last chair that you will ever sit in. Would you be able to walk up to the death chair? For you, this is a nightmare, but for Jefferson in Ernest J. Gains novel, Lesson Before Dying, this is a living reality in where he knows when he knows will die. Jefferson is very strong and was able to become thankful, become more selfless, and accept death. When Ernest J. Gains introduces jefferson, we know that Grant, a teacher, is in charge to change his perspective and help him improve in every way possible.
Larry Crown finds himself going through a midlife crisis as he gets fired from his job. In order to adjust with the changes in his life, Larry Crown decides to improve his education and goes back to college. Also, without a job, Larry Crown is forced to rethink his spending habits. Nerveless, using his current expertise, Larry Crown gets a job as an “On Call” line cook. Foremost, lacking college education enables Larry Crowne to advance further in his career as a store manager and gets laid off.
Sophia has been one the outside of things all her life. The oddball of sorts, the one that stuck out while still managing to be a wall flower all at the same time. She is intelligent by far, and that has always helped her excell when it came to school. But that never helped her excell at being the popular girl.
Characters Jack (Earnest) Worthing - Found as a baby in Victoria Station Cloakroom; Best friends with Algernon; Guardian of Cecily; In love with Gwendolen; Leads a second life under the alias Earnest Jack’s complexity as a character comes in two forms, the literal complexity of his background and his greater status as a symbol of hypocrisy. Initially, Jack comes from an seemingly unknown origin, arriving in the Victoria Station Cloakroom by luck, then being taken in by Mr. Cardew. He then later finds within the play’s last act, that his origins are not as complex as he once believed, discovering he is actually the elder brother of Algernon. This only adds to his status as a symbol of insincerity, showcased through his actions immensely. Jack feels that the situation of his birth should not affect his social status, but later embraces his birth as a type of propulsion into a sought after marriage.
To be trapped in one's own mind may be the worst prison imaginable. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", the narrator of the story is constantly at battle with many different forces, such as John, her husband, the yellow wallpaper that covers the walls of her room, and ultimately herself. Throughout the story the narrator further detaches herself from her life and becomes fixated on the yellow wallpaper that surrounds her in her temporary home, slowly driving her mad. The narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a major and dynamic character as she is the main character of the story, and throughout the story her personality and ways of thinking change drastically.
Face with overwhelming desegregation issues and racial tension to include disharmony within his high school football team, Coach Boone (the new black coach who had just replaced the highly successful white coach) gained respect and brought harmony to both the team and ultimately the community with discipline, rigorous training, and a “Command Coach” style in order to break the player’s will to establish a workable environment for teamwork. In the video, Coach Boone woke his team in the middle of the night during a training camp in order for him to lead a long distance run through the woods for conditioning and discipline. The timing caught the team off guard with “shock and awe.” This reduced complacency, reinforced the coach’s philosophy and objectives, provided a situation for the team to adapt as
Stephanie Plum, Morelli, and Ranger are three main characters in the book, One for the Money, by Janet Evanovich. Stephanie is a young woman struggling to get by in the city of Trenton, New Jersey. After losing her job, she goes against her family’s request and gets the dangerous job of a bounty hunter. She gets assigned Joe Morelli, who was accused of murder and who happened to be a childhood enemy. Stephanie is very inexperienced and receives help from a professional bounty hunter, Ranger.
