Handkerchief by Abdullah Aljundi Period 7
‘’The weather was unusually warm for the last day of October’’ (Lee 341) When the fisherman finally figured his true love a farmer’s daughter; he cared for her more than anything in the world. The farmer’s daughter Emily also loved the fisherman named John and would do anything to be with him. Emily ‘s dad on the other hand didn’t think he was good enough, so to keep them apart her dad sent her to live with her uncle on the other side of the country.
Soon after she left, John got very sick and died of malaria, but everyone said he died of a broken heart. The farmer felt so remorseful about his death, he could not tell his daughter what happened. So she continued dreaming the life she would have with him if they ever met again. One night many weeks there was a knock on her uncle’s door, when she opened the door she saw John standing there. Your father asked me to get you he stated, I came on his best horse is there anything wrong? She asked. I don’t know, he said. She packed a meager amount of items, and left.

When Emily touched his forehead she said it was stone cold, so she put her handkerchief around his forehead and continued their journey. When they arrived she quickly dismounted and knocked on her father’s door. Her Father was startled to see her. She asked her father why he needed her, but he said he didn’t need her, so she turned to John, but he was gone, so was the horse. They went to the stable to only see the horse drenched in sweat and trembling with fear. But there was no sign of John. Her father finally told her about John’s death. They quickly went to see John’s parents and decided to open the coffin. The corpse was in the coffin when they opened it, but around his head they found Emily’s
