The Healing Power of His Love “Forgive them, they know not what they do,” God whispered in Immaculee’s ear. Immaculee, a Tutsi Rwandan girl, was huddled in a incredibly tiny bathroom filled with seven other young ladies hiding from mass murderers trying to kill every Tutsi in the country. She struggled day and night trying to forgive the killers, but could only think of hatred for them until God said those words in her ear. She opened her heart to him and was saved by his loving mercy. Immaculee viewed being spared and being saved as different and through Immaculee’s story she showed me that we have to love and forgive others even if they have hurt us.
The United States was involved in the Vietnam War in the 1960s in order to support South Vietnam’s fight for an economic and cultural ties to the West. On the other hand, North Vietnam supported the ideas of a communist economy. However, the United States’s involvement in the war caused a million of dollars and lives lost, lost of faith towards the country’s government, and divided the nation instead of uniting as one. In conditions of uncertainty, decision-makers use devices to simplify the issues in attempts to reduce and make uncertainty bearable. During the Cold War, United States leadership relied on metaphors for the development of a strategy. Metaphors as the base of strategy are ineffective, and nothing better reveals the failure of metaphors than the Vietnam War. The use of metaphors to reduce uncertainty was what led to the failed United States strategy in Vietnam. Jerome Slater outlines how metaphors domino theory shows the structuring of the United States strategy towards Vietnam.

The soldiers of the Vietnam War were mostly innocent young men that were forced to face overwhelming emotional distress like the fear of their own deaths, guilt associated with taking the life of another soldier, and sorrow after witnessing their fellow comrades’ deaths. In The Things They Carried, author, Tim O’Brien, uses fictional stories to display the immense emotional burdens that the soldier Tim and his fellow members of Alpha Company experienced before, during, and after their unforgettably haunting time in Vietnam, and how each handled this “baggage” they carried. O’Brien’s sympathy belongs to the soldiers in the novel, knowing full and well that none of them belonged in the middle of the unjust war. Whether it was by the use of

The tactics used in Vietnam had never been seen by the U.S. military prior to this conflict. Combat patrols, although it had been used before, were much different in Vietnam, as shown in Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried.” In this story, the company of soldiers move with a “kind of inertia,” with “no sense of strategy or mission,” searching “villages without knowing what to look for, not caring” (O’Brien 1306). The Vietnam War, at least to the troops, did not have much of a significance. Unlike in World War II, when the goal was to prevent fascist dictators from taking control Europe, Africa, and Asia; troops in the Vietnam War had no idea what they were doing there; they were just pulled into the conflict without much drive to succeed or sense of duty to defeat the enemy.
