Hands and Feet! Many people particularly in Western countries use fork, spoon and knife when eating while in Eastern countries such as China, Japan, and Korea use chopsticks. In the Philippines, aside from using the spoon and fork people also use their bare hands while putting up their foot on the chair. This gesture of Filipinos is an example of nonverbal communication specifically kinesics. Merriam Webster 's Dictionary and other references defines kinesics as a study of body movements for it came from the word kinesis which means movement.
Method
This paper used survey as a method to find out what functions it plays base from why an individual is doing it or not. The subjects were composed of 25 students from the University of the Philippines Baguio regardless of their year and gender.
Results and Analysis Eating with bare hands while putting up the foot on the chair has been with us since time immemorial. Early Filipinos originally have no concept of fork, spoon, table, and chair. They eat with bare hands and since they do not use chair, they sit on the floor. That was until colonization began. If we can still remember, outsiders saw us as a backward, savaged and uncivilized people so they started teaching us how to be a civilized one. They saw the Filipinos manner of eating as unsanitary, unethical and disrespectful so they taught us proper manners in every occasion including table etiquettes. This is where the mindset of the eleven respondents originally came from
