When you think of the word “Magical Realism” you automatically think that it's either cooperated with fantasy or fiction. The significance of magical realism is much more complicated than that; the difference between fantasy and magical realism is that magical realism struggles with the reality with the real world while fantasy is known for fiction and something imaginary that is related to the modern world. Magical realism is where authors incorporates hybridity such as borders, mixing, and change to reveal a meaningful truth of reality and it gives the author a chance where magic isn't questioned and their stories do not apply to any rules. Marquez uses this element in his work to display the opposites between death and beauty, and beath being celebrated. In the story of “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” Marquez introduces a giant dead man that randomly arrived on the shore and the villagers who discover him automatically worshiped him as an idol. The villagers brought the dead man into their homes but they immediately realized that he is too big for their, house and clothes. As the women continue to freshen up the giant corpus, they started to fantasize how great and powerful he must hast have been if he was alive and healthy. Once the women start to fall in love with the dead corpus, Marquez introduces the opposite between death and beauty. Instead of analyzing death as grotesques and lifeless, the villagers analyze death as beautiful and majestic. The villagers were in awe about how different he was compared to them and they were mesmerized with his height and appearance when they commented “ He could have drawn fish out of the sea simply by calling their names and his wife would have been the happiest woman” Marquez 1.
