Rewriting Hannibal Hannibal is an American television series created by Bryan Fuller. The series aired on NBC from April 4th 2013 to August 29th 2015. During the third season, NBC decided to cancel the series as it was receiving too low ratings. It is challenging to define the series as one single genre as it can be categorised as a psychological thriller, a psychological horror or a crime thriller. Throughout the seasons, Hannibal has had an array of different directors, the most famous ones being Michael Rymer, Guillermo Navarro and David Slade. Mainly Bryan Fuller and Thomas Harris wrote the scripts. In addition to these, the series has its own music composer, Brian Reitzell, who is responsible for music and sound effects. In the first scene, Will Graham is standing in the middle of a crime scene. He closes his eyes and an orange line glides across the screen. When he opens his eyes, he has entered the mind of the killer and he can explain exactly how the murders were committed. Afterwards we cut to a new scene where Will Graham is giving a lecture on this particular crime. He is now a teacher, not an agent. As the students exit the room, Jack Crawford, head of the FBI Behavioural Science Unit enters. He approaches Will and he tries to act nice despite a previous conflict between the two. Jack notes that Will avoids eye contact, bur forces it upon him. Agent Crawford acts nice, yet with authority from the first scene. One important aspect of the introduction of characters is that the main antagonist Hannibal Lecter, whom the series got its name from, does not show up until halfway through the episode. Hannibal’s first scene can also acts as a sort of foreshadowing. During the previous scene, Will Graham noted that the killer is eating his victims. Will is a former FBI detective, but due to unknown circumstances, he now works as a teacher at the FBI College. In the series, Will originally represented the good, even though he constantly pushes the line. He cares greatly about others and he has even adopted seven stray dogs. Graham has the unique ability to empathise with others, including serial killers. Because of this, he prefers solitude, which is shown through him avoiding social situations and his choice to live on the outskirts of town. Although Will is mainly a good character, he is willing to act evil if it serves the greater good. Throughout the series, Will is also the character who goes through the biggest development. In season one he is shy and introverted until he meets Hannibal. He then experiences a mental breakdown and Hannibal frames him for a murder he did not commit. During season, two he is out for revenge and he will ignore his moral to get what he wants. It is during this season that the influence from Hannibal is clear. One can also see this in the final season. After Hannibal is imprisoned, Will retired and got married. He is much more like the character he was in the beginning than the one he was during season two. As soon as he gets back in touch with Hannibal, his dark side reappears.
