Going out into the wild all by yourself can be nerve wracking and lonely. Jon Krakauer makes Chris McCandless seemed like a noble person who took the initiative to try to go out and live into the wild. The book Into the Wild written by Jon Krakauer, is about a teenager named Chris McCandless leaving society and traveling to Alaska by himself with nothing else but a bag of rice and a small .22 caliber gun. Chris is heroic because he went to Alaska by himself without any knowledge of Alaska and didn’t know any of the dangers of Alaska. One way Krakauer make Chris seem noble is when Chris is about to enter Alaska he tells Gallien “ I’m goin’ to get on up there live off the land,go claim me a piece of the good life” (Krakauer 4).
Chris McCandless a man of curiosity, adventure, and almost enough strength; what went wrong, let’s take a step back to his life some months prior to his death. McCandless was rebellious,too rebellious, adventurous and had quite the odd social life compared to the average person. Chapter 9, Into The Wild, epigram fits into McCandless’s purpose for adventure because the letter from Everett Ruess begins with him explaining love for the wilderness and not wanting to return to society. He tells about his preference for the sky as his roof and prefered “..the unknown, to any paved highway.” Meaning he likes the challenge and adventure.
In the book, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer writes of his personal experience to add more to Chris McCandless’ story and to the readers understanding of his character. After Krakauer had written the article on Chris, many people had believed that Chris was a suicidal kid who wanted to rebel against the world and his parents. Krakauer, however, did not believe that this was the case because at one time he and Chris had similar characteristics and dreams, “As a youth, I am told, I was willful, self-absorbed, intermittently reckless, and moody. I disappointed my father in the usual ways. Like Chris McCandless, figures of male authority aroused in me a confusing melody of corked fury and hunger to please.”
Into the Wild, a book by Jon Krauker and a film by Sean Penn, features the journey of Christopher McCandless, the son of wealthy parents who graduates from Emory University as a top student and athlete. However, instead of embarking on a prestigious and profitable career, he chooses to give his savings to charity, rid himself of his possessions, and set out on a journey to the Alaskan wilderness. Chris McCandless claims, “Happiness is only real when shared. " One should always be prepared to go into the wild. Chris McCandless, a young adult, made the egotistical decision to venture into the wild leaving behind his loved ones and future.
Chris McCandless (a.k.a. Alexander Supertramp), the main character of Into the Wild was very much alike to Gregor. He was more adventurous and didn’t share his family loyalty, but Chris did not enjoy being an active member of society, and wanted isolation, just like Gregor did. McCandless was just more willing to pursue it than him. He preferred being alone in the wilderness to having a job and an apartment, and he hated all the social conventions that came with being an active member of the human world, such as wearing socks.
Throughout history, great men and women have been willing to die for a cause they believed in. Society often holds these people up as heroes, role models to be celebrated by the following generations. In his novel Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer makes the argument that Chris McCandless deserves to recognized as one of these heroes. Into the Wild tells the story of Chris’s life and ultimately his death in the Alaskan frontier, following him from his disappearance after college graduation to the eventual discovery of his remains two years later. Although Krakauer portrays Chris as a noble young man on an inspirational quest, in reality Chris’s journey reveals an out-of-touch young man who naively followed the ideals of his favorite authors.

After attending college and receiving a bachelor’s degree, Chris abandoned his family and possessions in order to search and see what "God has placed around us to discover" (57). Jon Krakauer explains his story in the nonfiction book "Into the Wild" by following his journal and interviewing people whom he met along the way. McCandless tried to keep from forming relationships with many people and his family, besides his sister; therefore, he clearly exhibits introvert tendencies. Before McCandless passes away in an old 'Magic Bus', he realizes how happiness works.
Chris McCandless abandoned the modern world and chose the wild because he believed that he could improve himself through living in the wild, and found the true happiness of the life. McCandless abandoned his wealthy family because of his complicated relationship with his father, and he was ashamed with his father’s adultery. Therefore, McCandless believed that human relationship was not the only thing that forms happiness, instead a man’s connection with the nature brings joy as well. He also believed the habitual lifestyle was not what people were meant to do, and people shouldn't have more possessions than what they need. For this reason, McCandless traveled with little effects.
McCandless was also searching for some peace and happiness to escape the turmoil in his life. “Seemed like a kid who was looking for something, looking for something just didn't know what it was” (Krakauer 42). Chris’s journey into the wild was his break from society, to get away from everything. He originally thought money was bad because it corrupt people and even affected his family. The negative views of money and the hurt for his family were too much for Chris to handle so he had to leave.
In today’s society, people achieve happiness through interaction with others, but in Ray Bradbury’s dystopian Novel, Fahrenheit 451, his characters believe that they need technology to enjoy their lives. People’s main priority is to be happy and have a successful life.
