The short story All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury illustrates that putting your desires first can affect others happiness. The story is about a girl who loves the Sun, but moves to Venus, a planet that sees the Sun once every seven years. She hates being stuck inside all day with rain, and rain, and rain twenty-four seven. All Summer in a Day focuses on the one day in seven years that the Sun comes out.
In All Summer in a Day there are multiple examples of people hurting others by putting their desires in front of someone’s happiness. For example, people might also see jealousy can lead to regret. The kids treating Margot horribly and keeping her from happiness in the Sun leads to them regretting everything. They come back in and it says they stood like planks nailed to the floor after they realize what they did to Margot. When they open the closet they see the sorrow on Margot’s face, they regret the decisions they made and the way they treated Margot. Although the kids do regret the decisions, they aren’t jealous of Margot, they made fun of her because she acts like a freak. Another example of a theme people see in All Summer in a Day is bullying. All the shoving, making fun of her, and locking her in the closet is all various forms of bullying. Jealous, and confused the kids treat Margot as less than a human. Even though the kids do bully Margot that is a theme even someone from Tigard could get. One final theme is jealousy clouds decisions. The kids jealousy and desires leads to them making stupid choices that affect Margot. The kids have no idea what they've done until they have played outside in the glorious Sun. Their minds were completely clouded and they were acting off of jealousy not. While someone might argue they are jealous, what are they really jealous of that Margot has?
