What ideas does the author develop regarding the ways in which individuals pursue or compromise their happiness? Meaning of happiness for everyone can vary from person to person. Some people find happiness in very little things, but some even after having everything will want more just for their happiness. It depends on the point of view of a person when it comes to happiness. A situation can be thought of as being a good thing or a bad thing depending on your view of the situation. Even after knowing she has a daughter and a husband, he still wants her back and wants Daisy to tell Tom how she never loved Tom and break up with him. This shows how far Gatsby is going to pursue his dreams and happiness. When Daisy comes over for tea he also shows her his house and how he is living in luxury now and can support her to make her happy. Daisy's husband Tom has a very bad temper. He is also having an affair with a girl named Myrtle. Tom goes to New York to meet her. One time when Tom and Nick went to New York to meet Myrtle. That day Myrtle was buying stuff for herself and also bought a puppy which Tom bought for her. Later that day, Myrtle was taunting Tom about Daisy. Tom got mad and hit her, which ended up breaking her nose. Even after that, Myrtle still didn't leave Tom. This tells us how Myrtle compromised some of her happiness to have more later. Myrtle wants a future with Tom, that is why she was dealing with Tom's behavior because Tom is rich. Tom thinks he is superior to everyone. This can be shown when he interrupts people. When they all gathered up at Tom's house, as Daisy was talking he interrupted her which led her to be quiet and also didn't treat her properly. This shows how Daisy is also compromising her happiness because she has a daughter and wouldn't leave Tom or want him to leave her. At the end of the book when Daisy and Gatsby were in the car together and Daisy was driving she hit Myrtle on her way back and later in the book Tom told Wilson ( Myrtle's husband) how Gatsby killed his wife. Which led Wilson to kill Gatsby. This action from Tom shows how to protect his wife, he blamed it on Gatsby. He did that for his wife and his family's
