Hardships come in various levels of intensity. Some are easier to bare than others. “Blackberries in June” by Ron Rash hands out a great deal of hardships that one family could hardly take. Jamie, one of the man characters of the story, must navigate through these hardships and figure out what is best for her husband and self. While dealing with an extremely jealous sister-in-law, dream abandonment to help the good of the family, and constant worries that something will happen to Matt, Jamie must decide if this will make or break her. Through determination, strength, and tolerance, Jamie was able to take these hardships in stride without crumbling under the tremendous pressure.

Jamie had to face the decision to give up what she worked hard and her carefully thought out plan to help her brother’s family stay afloat, just like her parents are doing, or to continue to live out her dream and goals. Jamie had carefully planned out their lives so that they would not be left to struggle like her brother and sister-in-law. Charlton’s wife and kids are currently facings a financial crisis when a saw severally damages Charlton’s leg to the point where it had to be amputated. Everyone in the family is expected to help out and Jamie’s mom insists on selling the lake house to help out. Her mother implied she manipulated Charlton to do exact same thing, “sacrifice” something important to help the over all family unit. “The same way I’d asked your brother to quite high school. Only I never had to ask. He knew what he had to be done and did it without me saying a word to him. Seventeen years old and he knew what had to be done” (212). Even though it can with a few strong choice words, Jamie’s determination is what kept her in her house and still on a wobbly course towards her dreams and aspirations.
