The Bond Through Theft and Friendship We’re always together, we’re one of a kind, three words describe us “partners in crime”. This saying perfectly describes Liesel’s relationship with Hans, Rudy, and Arthur. If you were to try and find Liesel, she would either be with Rudy and Arthur stealing food, with her papa in the basement practicing reading, or just walking around with Rudy planning their next little heist. Throughout the book thief, the presence of theft plays a big role in Liesel’s relationships and bonds with Hans, Rudy, and Arthur. After Rudy had been beaten down by his hitler youth leader time and time again, Liesel decided to cheer him up the best way she knew how; stealing. It took them awhile to find the right opportunity, but as soon as Frau Diller left her window open, they struck. Liesel stole “the whistler” from the library, but neglected to check the kitchen for any food(283-291). After Liesel and Rudy stole from Frau Diller, the book was not the only thing they gained. They gained a strong bond and an even stronger friendship. Rudy was upset when he found out all Liesel stole was a lousy book(291), but the friendship and bond built from the experience caused him to jump in a freezing river to save that very book(302-303). Rudy might not have approved of a book over food, but he would still jump in a freezing river to save his best friends book if it meant that it would make her happy.
