The Harlem Renaissance took place in Harlem, New York City. It was the African-American Cultural Revolution. It was known as the "New Negro Movement" at the time. It was named after the 1925 anthology by Alain Locke. Not too long after World War I it started.
Even though this movement is known as “The Harlem Renaissance” it spread all over urban areas of the Northeast and Midwest of the United States.
The New York City neighborhood-bounded by the Harlem River, eventually became the biggest and one of the most important black communities in the United States. Harlem began as a farm village in Dutch, New Amsterdam. It remained an agricultural community until after the Civil War. In the 1920’s, the Harlem Renaissance brought together a talented group of artists, writers, and musicians that included Aaron Douglas, Ro-mare Bearden, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Duke Ellington. Harlem, a district of New York City, situated to the north 96th street in NE Manhattan.
The Harlem Renaissance was a time in history when African Americans were able to express themselves artistically through their writing, music, dance, and artwork. The Harlem Renaissance began around 1917 and ended around 1935. It was in between World War I and the Great Depression. The movement was originally called the New Negro Movement, but was later renamed The Harlem Renaissance.
My next and final topic that I chose is The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was rooted in the struggle for black civil rights. During and about right after WWI, in a phase of the Great Migration, some half a million African Americans moved from the rural South to the cities of the North. Most people moved in hopes of escaping the poverty and the oppression of Jim Crow Laws. They encountered racist hostility nearly as bitter as they experienced in the South.
The Harlem Renaissance was a black literary and art movement that began in Harlem, New York. Migrants from the South came to Harlem with new ideas and a new type of music called Jazz. Harlem welcomed many African Americans who were talented. Writers in the Harlem Renaissance had separated themselves from the isolated white writers which made up the “lost generation” The formation of a new African American cultural identity is what made the Harlem Renaissance and the Lost Generation unique in American culture because it influenced white literacy and it was a sense of freedom for African Americans.
Blacks and whites began mixing socially; and it was the art of Black America that made this connection between the races possible. The Harlem Renaissance had a big impact on the art world and for African Americans. While the Harlem Renaissance was built on African American traditions and culture, it was also influenced by European and White American artist. Art has always been a form of expression, and for African American it became an outlet for opposing racial inequality and to quote, “primitive/savage” stereotypes placed upon them.
The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great cultural growth in the black community. It is accepted that it started in 1918 and lasted throughout the 1930s. Though named the ‘Harlem’ Renaissance, it was a country-wide phenomenon of pride and development among black Americans, the likes of which had never existed in such grand scale. Among the varying political actions and movements for equality, a surge of new art appeared: musical, visual, and even theatre. With said surge, many of the most well-known black authors, poets, musicians and actors rose to prevalence including Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Louis Armstrong, and Eulalie Spence.
The Harlem Renaissance was the cultural explosion that took place in Manhattan during the 1920’s and 30’s after World War I, peaking at 1928. It was here where African-American culture bursted into a flurry of nightclubs, speakeasies, community centers, cafes, publishing houses, and galleries. 1920-1930 was a party that lasted a decade, and Manhattan was the center of it. The Harlem Renaissance resulted in what came to be the Jazz Age and the blues, introducing musicians such as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong; all at the Cotton
The Harlem Renaissance was the development of African American culture, particularly in the creative arts, and the most influential movement in the African American history. It started in the early 1920s and lasted up till the mid 1930s. During this time period, there was a lot of advancements in African American literacy, music, theatre and and visual arts. The African Americans became significant figures in the American society. The Harlem Renaissance was beneficial and had a positive impact on the African Americans because they became important figures with creativity in the American society.
African Americans lived in a world of racial injustices and cultural restrictions until the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a time where there is an African American literary and art movement in the uptown Manhattan neighborhood. It is the turning point in African American culture, as well as their place in America. The African Americans were starting to become equal in American society. While the Renaissance built on earlier traditions of African American culture, it was greatly affected by the trends of the Europeans and white Americans.
Last year when the new Luke Cage series came out on Netflix, I eagerly binge-watched the series and upon completion, I realized the love that the people had for Harlem. Unlike the rest of Manhattan, Harlem was an actual neighborhood with people that grew up with one another and had a sense of community, but most importantly, Harlem was notoriously black in a borough that was predominately white. I find it fascinating that Harlem is notoriously black because one of the greatest African-American movements happened decades ago and Harlem’s identity is still the same. It all started in the 1920’s and what started off small became a huge sensation known as the Harlem Renaissance.
The Harlem Renaissance was a movement that reflected the culture of African Americans in an artistic way during the 1920’s and the 30’s. Many African Americans who participated in this movement showed a different side of the “Negro Life,” and rejected the stereotypes that were forced on themselves. The Harlem Renaissance was full of artists, musicians, and writers who wrote about their thoughts, especially on discrimination towards blacks, such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Langston Hughes. The Harlem Renaissance was an influential and exciting movement, and influenced others to fight for what they want and believed in. The Harlem Renaissance was the start of the Civil Rights Movement.
During the period of Harlem Renaissance, many black artists emerged and took forward the mission of promoting black identity and expressing the black or the Negro thoughts at time. At start, this movement was viewed or was seen as a literary movement which changed with time and became to be known as a national movement with links with international development in arts and culture.
