Imagine being an African American in the 1930’s, You ran away from the south and made it all the way to Harlem and you see a level of expression from African Americans you never thought would be possible. African Americans wanted to be able to express themselves freely, so the congregation went to one of the only places that would allow open expression, and that place was Harlem. From when African Americans first got to Harlem, African Americans expressed themselves using the arts. Over Time, their expression formed what society found to be normal for that time. She was able to easily convey her message in her art using the abstract painting style. Especially in the painting ‘Les Fetiches’ made in 1938. Les Fetiches displayed a message that other African Americans translated into what they wanted it to be. Abstract paintings can have more than one meaning and is usually interpreted in whatever way the viewer finds the hidden message to be. Another piece of art that aided in the social change was ‘The Talking Skull’. The talking Skull made in 1939 by Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller sends a dark mood. The painting as the other forms of art, has a message. The painting is suppose to represent a folk tale that was spread around the community at that time. The folk tale says that an object brought a man into some land, but he ended up dying in that land. So, he is warning the people that are on the land before they end up like him. That could easily be taken as a symbol for slavery and running away from the slave masters. The land, being the slave owners because the slave owners often beat the slaves close to death and the skull being a slave who didn’t run away.
