Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was one of America's most acclaimed writers. Arguably, her most memorable book was an anti-slavery novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", published in 1852.

Known as "Hattie" by her seven brothers and three sisters, Harriet was born in Litchfield, CT in 1811. Her father was a noted and respected minister, Lyman Beecher, who taught his children to be actively involved in life's pressing issues of the day.
While a teenager, Harriet attended an all-girls school in Hartford, CT run by her older sister, Catharine.
