Araminta Harriet Ross or Harriet Tubman was a brave, daring, and courageous woman who put everything on the line in order to save the ones she loved and more. Harriet was looked upon as a savior to many and evil to others, but the people who found her evil weren’t any better. In fact they were worse much worse than her. For it was the people who found her as a savior who were correct. Araminta was born into slavery by Harriet Green and Ben Ross around 1820 and were owned by Mary Brodess and Anthony Tompson. Her owners were cruel people and punished all their slaves greatly for doing only one simple thing wrong. In 1849 she used the Underground Railroad to make it to Philadelphia in the north where slavery was not allowed. She had learned about the Underground Railroad through songs that were sung in the field while slaves did yard work such as Follow the Drinking Gourd. Her first of many trips to come. Almost a year later she found out that her niece was going to be sold and that it would separate her from her husband so she risked everything to go back and save them and their two children. This made her start thinking if she could help them why not go back and help more. That is exactly what she did she saved the rest of family and more. But of course something went wrong. California was wanting to become part of the United Sates which of course broke out the argument, would they be a slave state or not? The answer was no they would not, but it came with a price of course. The U.S.A passed a law that ruined almost everything. The Fugitive Slave Law which practically said that any escaped African American slave would be returned to the owner(s) of he or she. By this point you would think Harriet would give up and go to live in the north in peace right? WRONG. She rerouted the Underground Railroad to Canada where slavery was not tolerated. By doing so she became a symbol of freedom for slaves and more and more were saved. But as she continued to become famous among slaves she also became infamous among slave owners. She had been
