Black History Month is a special time when we celebrate the amazing things Black people have done in history. It's a time to remember and honor their achievements, especially when they've had to overcome tough challenges. One person we look up to at this time is Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland around 1820. Even though life was hard for her, she escaped to freedom. She didn't stop there, she said. She helped many others escape too, using something called the Underground Railroad. It was like a secret map that helped enslaved people find their way to freedom in the North (Britannica). During her later years, she became a passionate advocate for women's rights and suffrage. Despite Black men gaining the right to vote in 1870, Tubman highlighted the ongoing oppression of women, regardless of race. She joined forces with suffragettes like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in speaking engagements and was the key speaker at the first meeting of the National Federation of Afro-American Women in 1896 (Captivating History). In addition to her activism, Tubman dedicated herself to charity and helping those in need within her community in Auburn, New York. Despite not receiving a salary from the Union Army or a pension, she raised funds from the sale of homegrown produce and pigs and received donations, Her financial situation improved slightly after her husband Nelson's death in 1888, when she began receiving a pension of eight dollars a month (Captivating History). Tubman's life and work continue to inspire people around the world to stand up against unfairness and work together for a better future. Her story teaches us that even when things are tough, we can still make a big difference.
