Harriet Tubman’s Route To Freedom By Armaan Gupta The Civil War was one of the deadliest wars in American history, and many brave people risked their lives to fight in it. One of them was a slave that risked her whole life to help people of her kind. Her name was Harriet Tubman. A kind and selfless person, Harriet Tubman helped many slaves get to freedom throughout her lifetime. She was born in 1822 in Dochestor, Maryland as a slave and had 8 siblings. The name given to her at birth was Araminta Ross, but she decided to change it to Harriet Tubman in 1844, after getting married to a free black slave named John Tubman. Later, in 1849, her master died and she made a decision that affected her whole life. She took the risk and ran away. If she was caught, she would have been punished for life. The way we are defining “greatest,” is by the amount of risk, the time devoted, and the number of people helped in the activity. The four accomplishments we are looking at are Harriet Tubman’s help as a conductor, a spy, a nurse, and a caregiver. Out of these, I think Harriet Tubman’s greatest achievement was her time as a spy. After escaping from her slave house, Harriet Tubman joined in helping in an escape route for all run-away slaves.
