Harriet Tubman is well known for The Underground Railroad, which was a lifeline for slaves escaping to freedom. Harriet Tubman was one of its most favorite conductors and was born in the early 1800’s, and died in 1913. She told many stories about her adventures through slavery. She was very skilled with the whole process of the underground railroad, and had a fascinating life. Harriet Tubman was born in 1820, in Dorchester County, Maryland. Her exact birthdate is unknown. Both her mother and her father were slaves. She was of course born into slavery, and spent most of her early life living and working on a plantation. Her early life was full of hardship. Violence was an early part of her childhood. Her real name was Araminta, than later in life she changed her name to her mother’s name Harriet. At age six she had already gotten a job as a weaver's helper, which didn’t last long because the wool made her sneeze. Then she continued to work for the same family, but instead she would set and check the muskrat traps, located around a swamp. After constantly setting and checking the traps daily, she was sent to work for another family as a nursemaid. She had found a place to live and had made some friends along the way. But she didn’t feel satisfied, she knew that her family could be in trouble. She had gone back to Maryland to get her family and then brought them back North. But on the third rescue mission when she came back for her husband, she had found out that he had re-married another women. Once she had gotten back to Philadelphia she realized that it wasn’t a safe place anymore so she wanted to go to Canada with many others who followed her. Slavery was prominent in her area, she was constantly making trips back and forth rescuing many in her family and others that wanted to head up
