Who are Human Right Activists?

Activist - a commonly known person who campaigns to bring about political or social change, but they are more than just changemakers they are brave, strong and intelligent. They are willing to stand up for what is right and not back down no matter the cost. Harriet Tubman was an African American/slave rights activist. Nelson Mandela was also an African American rights activist, and governmental rights activist. Liu Xiaobo was a political and human rights activist. Despite living in different time periods and fighting for different issues Liu Xiaobo, Harriet Tubman, and Nelson Mandela had one thing in common, a goal for everyone to be treated equally and to have equal human rights around the world. Tubman displayed strong characteristics of an activist as she never stopped fighting for her freedom when she was held captive as a slave. She was whipped, yelled at, and physically and mentally abused every single day. That did not stop her from finally escaping the grasps of her slave owners though. Despite her tortuous past she was not afraid to sacrifice herself to return to the very plantations where she was whipped to help save others. According to Biography.com, “Physical violence was a part of daily life for Tubman and her family”. Despite many challenges, Tubman was clever in fighting slavery as she lead many slaves to freedom in an elaborate underground system. Biography.com says, “Tubman risked her life to lead hundreds of family members and other slaves from the plantation system to freedom on this elaborate secret network of safe houses”. Harriet Tubman was a strong activist as she was never afraid to take risks, and even put herself in danger while helping others. She put a lot of effort and time into helping people, and making it harder for people to catch the escaping slaves. A final example that shows that Harriet Tubman
