Alexander Solzhenitsyn once stated that, “Good literature substitutes for an experience which we have not ourselves lived through.” The quote means that a good piece of writing will give readers the feel and the experience of a situation that they have not been through. It also means that if if they haven't been through something, a good piece of literature will substitute for that and make it feel like they were there. Good literature should also be able to take readers anywhere and any places - and make us experience something we’ve never been able to!! It will make the readers feel the emotion, the feel, and the ambiance of what is happening - almost as if they were there themselves. Set in a futuristic society in 2081, the protagonist, Harrison Bergeron, has a goal of letting the world know what is really going on. He was taken away from his family years ago - but his family was “brainwashed,” so they can’t remember any sad things that have happened - so they have forgotten about what has happened to him. This part of the short story relates to the critical lens essay because it makes the reader feel sympathy and become emotional about the troubled world where everyone is equal. I felt the emotions and the happiness because of her win. This is an example of a good piece of literature because it replaces for an experience I have never gone through. Since I have never gone through it, it’s very well written to be able to make me actually feel like I’m experiencing the same thing Hazel is. Furthermore, this story is another example to the critical lens quote. In this part of the story, the author uses the literary element of theme. Hazel was really trying to figure out her true self. While she acts and talks quite confidently, she constantly feels as if she must prove herself to the world. Although Hazel won, it’s not the most important thing that happened. The important thing is that she found her true self and learnt to respect herself and others. It makes me
