The Beginning of Harry Potter In the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, by J.K. Rowling, Harry, who's the main character has to overcome his challenges and fears by standing up for what is right. Harry changes from being a weak and shy boy, to a powerful and confident young boy. Throughout the book, Harry faces his biggest fear of an evil wizard that goes by the name of Voldemort returning. Harry wants to protect his new friends from danger. To do this, he must step out of the shadows and into the glaring light to start a new beginning for his life. At first, Harry begins the book as feeling nervous and scared about going to Hogwarts, but in the end, Harry feels brave and confident because he has taken the first step …show more content…

During the trip to the platform to go to Hogwarts, Ron's mother talks to Harry for the first time: "Hello, dear, she said. First time at Hogwarts? Ron's new too. She pointed at the last and youngest of her sons. He was tall, thin, and gangling, with freckles, big hands and feet, and a long nose. Yes, said Harry. The thing is - the thing is, I don't know how to - " (93). This quote shows that Harry is very nervous, and he doesn't have that much experience of what to do. Harry doesn't want to be that someone who's made fun of that makes everyone laugh. To avoid that fate, Harry will have to try and make friends. After Harry defeated Professor Quirrel, Dumbledore rewards Harry for his heroics as: "Third - to Mr. Harry Potter... said Dumbledore. The room went dead quiet, for pure nerve and outstanding courage, I award Gryfindor house sixty points. The din was deafening. Those who could add up while yelling knew that Gryfindor now had four-hundred seventy two points" (306). This represents Harry succeeding in doing the right thing so now, everyone will think that he's a hero.
