In the beginning of the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix we see that Lord Voldemort, the primary villain for our main character Harry Potter has returned; however majority of the Wizarding World refuses to believe this. Due to the fact that a select few including Harry, Ron, and Hermione know about Lord Voldemort’s return, the Ministry of Magic begins an attempt in buckling down on rumors. This attempt includes sending Dolores Umbridge an Undersecretary from the Ministry, to Hogwarts to squander rumors and enforce the Ministry’s will. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix we see a prime example of what government involvement does to one’s education system. Somewhere in this combination of jobs Umbridge was given the capability of relieving teachers of their jobs. This is done in one case of Professor Sybill Trelawney, Head of the Department of Divination. Umbridge goes around to each of the teachers and assesses their skills. When she gets to Professor Trelawney though, that’s when things start to go south. Professor Trelawney is supposed to be capable of Divination, or foretelling the future, Umbridge asks Trelawney for a prophecy at which time Trelawney is incapable of giving her one. When Umbridge is on her way out of the door Trelawney states that Umbridge is in “grave danger” this is taken by Umbridge and she then leaves. Soon afterwards we see Professor Trelawney being kicked out of Hogwarts by Umbridge, Professor McGonagall intervenes and Trelawney is allowed to stay. Umbridge makes sure the students are following her impositions by walking around “fixing” things with her wand, such as, a couple kissing gets separated and boys out of dress code get their ties ties and their shirts tucked in. Dolores Umbridge also initiates a militia type group of students called the Inquisitorial Squad, a squad consisting of Slytherin students. This is relevant because it brings an air of Nazi Germany to Hogwarts, minus the guns and concentration camps. Students are going around badgering other students and trying to catch kids acting up. But, to be fair, this only happens after Harry and his friends start Dumbledore’s Army. Dumbledore’s Army comes about because Umbridge believes she can teach Defense Against the Dark Arts without using any magic to practice, which is a horrible way to teach and shows that Umbridge has never taught before because she would have known that hands on teaching is the best form of teaching. Harry and his friends band together in the Room of Requirement and Harry becomes essentially their true Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and Harry does a fantastic job at being a professor. His students learn quickly and Harry is full of praises for his peers, the complete opposite of what Umbridge does. Umbridge instills fear and resentment into the
