Truman’s Decision President Truman was justified in his decision to drop the atomic bombs in Japan. Truman faced many pros and cons of his decision, however, the pros outweighed the cons. There were very few alternatives to the extreme, the casualties in the Pacific were growing and the rate the war it would save lives. Although, there were many lives lost Truman made the right decision for his country.

In places like Shreveport, who refused to abide by the FEP, they lost defense contracts because they did not want to be bullied to hire African-Americans. Despite this, many African-Americans were hired to do jobs that would normally go to a white man because of a labor shortage. There was also a bid to stop them from voting.

After slavery was abolished, inequality in American society ran high, and many laws were put in place to restrict the rights and abilities of African Americans. Some laws include the Jim Crow Laws (1870 to 1950s) and the Supreme Court Ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) that ruled that there could be “separate but equal” facilities and services for people of color and white Americans.
African Americans still had a struggle even when the war ended until they had equal rights. In 1909 a group of prominent black and white people created a group called the national association for the advancement colored people their was to increase racial equality. During the 1960’s, the Civil Rights Movement was a big topic and controversy with all of the United States. It was quite clear that African Americans did not get treated the same way that whites did. It had been ruled that it was constitutional to be “separate but equal”, but African Americans always had less than the whites did. For example, the schools that they had were run down, and had very little classrooms, books, and buses. Martin Luther King had a large role in the Civil Rights Movement, as did Malcolm X, and others.

The Tuskegee Airmen, faced racial discrimination in a segregated military, but was given the technical and tactical skills to be pilots and officers when due to their skin color; they were never allowed to fly prior to WWII. The Tuskegee Airmen proved to American society that “no discrepancy existed between the effectiveness of properly trained black and white soldiers.” On July 26, 1948, President Truman issued an executive order that outlawed racial segregation in the United States Armed Forces. However, with the help of Executive Order 8802, as a nation, the United States has accomplished many things in relation historically. Historical moments like The Civil Rights Movement in the 60’s forever changed the United States. African Americans had been free for almost a century, but did not have civil rights. Executive Order 8802 impacted The Civil Rights Movement as it gave African Americans a voice in the workforce and socially as well.
World War II was fought due to the persecution and execution of multiple minorities such as Jewish people. gypsies, the disabled, and homosexuals. However, the irony of this event is that while America was fighting for the rights of others overseas, there was an immense amount of discrimination happening right here in the United States. African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and other underrepresented minorities were all put at a large disadvantage in terms of economic and social opportunity. While the United States army needed more soldiers to fight in the war, African Americans who were fighting for their country in the military faced immense discrimination from Caucasian soldiers.
